Growing Phalaenopsis orchids outdoors // Transitioning from indoors
Factors to consider when transitioning your Phalaenopsis orchids outside. My phals were moved in November 2021, and it is now 5 months later, they are doing well overall. Lots of initial stress as they were 'transitioned' abruptly, but I have learned a lot. Still much to learn as these orchids embark upon our Brisbane winter.
Stick around at the end for a spike hunt and some blooper reels of me trying to film with Maisie in the shadehouse (unsuccessfully!).

Update on Repotted Orchids // 3.5 months later
Переглядів 2 тис.2 роки тому
First orchids repotted this year. Actually the first in the shadehouse. Put directly back in to shadehouse without any special care. And they are all doing well. Even the Onidcidium which was close to death. I do get asked for updates on my repot videos so here it is. #OrchieDee
Repotting Oncidium Sharry Baby
Переглядів 7 тис.2 роки тому
Getting in a few repots before Winter in Brisbane, Queensland. Oncidium Sharry Baby has grown in to a very large plant and has been long overdue for a repot. I've given her a 25cm pot but it's still probably too small. It will eventually need to go in to a very large pot or divided in a couple years. My repotting style is a lot more relaxed now. I remove old sphagnum and obviously dead roots, b...

Top 7 Reasons to REPOT your Orchid // My first repottings in 2022
Переглядів 3,1 тис.2 роки тому
I have not repotted an orchid since 2020. No joke! These plants ALL need a repot this year. This is not going to happen. So this video is about reasons your orchid may need a a repot, and the urgency in which this needs to happen. Prioritise your time, and triage the repots appropriately! This is not a repotting video but a little walk through of the orchids I've hand-picked to be repot first t...

Orchies in Bloom // December 2021
Переглядів 1,9 тис.2 роки тому
FINALLY! A new Orchies in Bloom video. Summer tends to be a quieter few months for blooms for me. Well... not this year!! December has some real showstoppers. The Vandas are coming out in full force this year. They are absolutely thriving in the shadehouse conditions. A lot of my seedling vandas have also now reached flowering size. Orchid growing is once again becoming a joy.... we won't talk ...
My Laelia Orchids // Care tips
Переглядів 4,6 тис.2 роки тому
A spontaneous video on my Laelia orchids and their crosses. Looked after well, these orchids have the potential for multiple growths to develop in single direction of growth - and they all flower at the same time. Feeding and watering well is very important during their growth phase. Use a coarse well draining media as these orchids do like to dry somewhat between waterings. High light is impor...
Phalaenopsis Blooms 2021 // Not pretty BUT We'll do better next year!
Переглядів 1,5 тис.2 роки тому
Time to be honest !! I have had an amazing year ... but my orchids definitely haven't. And for the foreseeable future, there are just more important things that take priority. BUT I do love my orchids, and I get SO MUCH joy from growing them. It's a hobby that I want to share with my children and also of course all of you. So I must find ways to make this achievable. SO no more multiple grow sp...
Orchid Shadehouse // Organised by Genera
Переглядів 1,4 тис.2 роки тому
30C one day and torrential rain the next. Spring is here in QLD and the shadehouse is READY!!! I never imagined I could keep the majority of my orchids in one location, but this shadehouse is a dream. I've moved even the typical lower light orchids out here and I'm optimistic. The main thing is I'll need to keep everything well hydrated in Summer. The key will be to get all the orchids in a ver...
Queensland Orchid Shadehouse Tour - FINALLY!
Переглядів 2,6 тис.2 роки тому
Finally!! A tour of my shadehouse. This was the best investment I've made for the orchids and I'm so grateful I got it installed prior to Maisie being born. This is basically a self sustaining setup with minimal input from myself. It has a misting system which drenches the orchids within minutes, but due to the orchids being fully exposed they will require very frequent watering once summer rol...

That is the Madeira vine aka the vine from hell. Don’t let it get started in your place or you’ll never get rid of it. Don’t drop any part of it on the ground as it is capable of growing new plants.

I have a new one starting, so I look forward to trying your method. Also, I have wondered about using Seasol, but I am not sure of the ratio. Can you help with that, please.

Excellent explaining, i got a new Dendorium Orchid, it has many new orchids growing all around and was thinking it must need a new repot soon, I must get all the tools needed, thanks for this easy demonstration to follow 😁 my last phelnaopsis withered and the last leaves fell then i finally gave up🍃 but I learned alot from it.. ya see it was a gift and I decided I knew already how to take care of it that it's like any other plant, plenty of sunlight and water.. i looked up when things started looking bad and found it was too late.. the water i gave and put it outside were the 2 most mistake i ever thought possible, then i found it had root rot.. Baaaad haha like there was barely any green maybe like 5 roots left out of like 15 😅 the water i gave it damaged em all .. so i learned my lesson, study study study no matter waht plant I get .. i know they all more less differently care for now 🤣

The weather is just so harsh and unpredictable these days, I much prefer to have the safety and predictability of growing inside. It gets up to 114°F here in the summer in Texas, and we have many more consecutive freezing days outside in the winter. It's scary! Is this the new norm? God, I sure hope not.

Thank you for the great video. I have one phal with new growth that hasn’t bloomed in a long time, so I am hopeful that it’s a spike. I wanted to comment on your statement regarding when to water. It was my understanding that orchid roots grown in clear pots are green because they are exposed to light and air, contain chlorophyll and photosynthesize. White roots would not necessarily indicate the need to water, dry medium might be a better way to tell if a plant needs water. I have heard other people make that statement but I’m not sure it’s 100% accurate. Otherwise, the video was really helpful, thank you.
